Spring barley saw the most significant decline, to 2.2 million hectares from 2.7 million last year, the ministry said.
It said the spring wheat sowing area fell to 152,000 hectares from 239,000, while the area under maize rose slightly to 4.8 million hectares from 4.7 million.

The move means that the EU will re-introduce import duties of 12 euros per tonne for low- and medium-quality wheat and 16 euros a tonne for feed barley under its tariff-rate quotas. EUGRAIN/TRQ
The EU had suspended the duties from the start of the current 2012/13 season on July 1 in response to high grain prices.

In imports, the EU cleared 106,000 tonnes of maize import licences, taking the total this season to 10.1 million tonnes, FranceAgriMer said in a note.

LONDON, May 31 (Reuters) - The International Grains Council said on Friday that global 2013/14 maize production is expected to rise by 10 percent to a record 945 million tonnes, boosting stocks.
World wheat production is expected to rise by 4 percent to 682 million tonnes, the IGC said in its monthly report.
The IGC said global maize stocks were expected to rise by 27 million tonnes to 149 million tonnes by the end of the 2013/14 season, while wheat stocks were forecast to climb 2 million tonnes to 180 million tonnes.
